The media reaction tells me that Pence absolutely dominated the debate. With a far-left moderator (not unusual) and a Kamala Harris getting more speaking time, Pence still managed to hit on the facts and not fall for the liberal projection games.
Jake Tapper explains what you just saw.
Something like…Pence has an advantage being a man. It’s tough being a woman.

George Stephanopoulos, of ABC, said he saw a lot of "mansplaining" going on.
Pence answered just as he should have when asked about a peaceful transfer of power if he and President Trump were to lose.
He pointed out that the Democrats still have not accepted the results of the 2016 election, and it's 2020.
A peaceful transition of power does not involve a coup attempt by the losing party and defectors within the intelligence community.
"When Joe Biden was VP, the FBI actually spied on my and Trump's campaign," Pence said. "Hillary Clinton told Joe Biden that under no circumstances should he concede".
Nonetheless, Pence stated that he believes President Trump will get 4 more years because of the massive successes they've had while also fighting such a corrupt attempt to remove him at any cost.
Pence absolutely killed it - and it's obvious because the media doesn't want to discuss any substance of the debate, they go straight to identity politics.
