Fauci vs. Trump — Who’s Right?

“We have met the moment and we have prevailed,” said President Donald Trump Monday, as he supported the opening of the U.S. economy before the shutdown plunges us into a deep and lasting depression.

Tuesday, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, made clear to a Senate committee his contradictory views.

“If states reopen their economies too soon, there is a real risk that you may trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control,” said Fauci. “My concern is that we will start to see little spikes that might turn into outbreaks of the disease (and) the inevitable return of infections.”

Fauci is talking of the real possibility of a second and even more severe wave of the pandemic this summer and fall, if we open too soon.
There is evidence to justify the fears of Fauci and Dr. Robert Redfield of the Centers for Disease Control, who told the same Senate committee, “We are not out of the woods yet.”

Yet, there is a case to be made for the risks that Trump and red state governors are taking in opening up sooner.

The Washington Post daily graph of new deaths nationally has been showing a curve sloping downward for a month from April's more than 2,000 a day. On no day yet this week did the U.S. record 2,000 dead from the virus. On some days, there were fewer than 1,000.

The graph for new coronavirus cases, which was showing more than 30,000 a day in April, is now closer to 25,000.

Also, hospitalizations and ICU occupancies are not as high as they were. Hospitals put up in Central Park and the Javits Center seem not to have been needed. There was and is no shortage of ventilators. The Navy hospital ships Comfort and Mercy are returning to their home ports.

Also, not all states are suffering equally, nor are all communities in the hardest-hit states. There have been three times as many COVID-19 cases in New Jersey as in Texas, though New Jersey is a fraction of the size and has a fraction of the population of Texas.

There are twice as many cases in Massachusetts as in Florida, the nation's third-most populous state with one of its highest percentages of retirees and elderly. There have been five times as many cases in New York as in California.
It is the nursing homes filled with the elderly and ill that have proven to be the real killing fields of this virus. According to The New York Times, one-third of all deaths from COVID-19 have come among residents and staff of nursing homes. Beyond these are the meatpacking plants and the prisons where social distancing is almost nonexistent.

Moreover, while Fauci and Redfield are specialists in epidemics, Trump's portfolio goes far beyond that.

He is chief of state, head of government and commander in chief, responsible for the security and defense of the nation. His portfolio is broader and deeper than those of Fauci and Redfield.

In the first hours of the Normandy invasion, General Eisenhower must have been rightly alarmed about the high U.S. casualties on Omaha Beach. But he also had to concern himself with the failure to capture the Port of Caen to bring ashore the armor to stop any German counterattack that might turn D-Day into another Anzio.

Ike could not worry about casualties alone.

According to The Washington Post, economists already project that 100,000 small businesses have shuttered, never to reopen.

"(D)eeper and longer recessions can leave behind lasting damage to the productive capacity of the economy," warned Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell on Wednesday. "Avoidable household and business insolvencies can weigh on growth for years to come."

Ultimately, Fauci is not "The Decider" here. Trump is.
It is he who is accountable to the nation for weighing the losses, both human and material, due to his decisions.

Fauci may be the best at what he does, but he is still only an adviser. As John F. Kennedy said after the Bay of Pigs, it is the president who ultimately bears responsibility for what he does and fails to do, while "the advisers may move on to new advice."

Believing he can do no more than his White House is now doing to contain the incidence of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, Trump has decided his primary job is to prevent the nation from a catastrophic economic collapse from which it might take years to recover.

The country is slowly moving in Trump's direction, slowly opening. And he will be responsible for whether the policy succeeds or opens the floodgates to a second and worse wave, should it come.

As Abraham Lincoln put his situation: "I mean to keep going. If the end brings me out all right, then what is said against me won't matter. If I'm wrong, ten angels swearing I was right won't make a difference."

  1. Dr. Fauci is looking at one part of the elephant and to him it looks like one thing,
Trump is looking at the entire elephant and sees that it has at least 6 different looking parts.

    1. Predictions have a ‘ shelf life ‘. . . . Whose opinion is ‘ correct ‘ will only be born out in time. They BOTH have a point.

  2. There is always infections in nursing homes and hospitals, you can go into a hospital for an ailment feeling pretty good that you will be only in the hospital for 1 or 2 days, then when they come into check with all their equipment they find you have pneumonia and you end up in the hospital 1 or 2 days more.

  3. I have lost confidence in the advice of Fauci in light of what I have learned about his past. Not a big fan of the CDC either. Why have we not asked Faucei about his prediction of a pandemic in Trump’s first term. I think that requires an explanation.

  4. The best thing the president can do is to send the fraud Fauci packing. Fauci has done more to hurt my country than even Obama and the attempted coup cabal.

  5. Dr. Fauci has been wrong on nearly all of his “Chinese Virus Forecasts” and seems not to understand the Economy is what enabled him to be a millionaire.

The President has been correct on most all his forecasts, down to, and including his recognition of a 5-cent “cure” for the Chinese Virus; i.e., Hydroxychloroquine which was nixed by the Left and the FDA, CDC and drug industry consortium, which didn’t want a nickel “cure” when a multi-billion-dollar solution is in the wings.

As for as “stupid”, there will be a picture of NY Governor Cuomo and NYC Mayor BigBird in the next release of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary . . . . . they did everything wrong and still are howling about their failures.

  6. “DR” fauci has been proven to be a “deep state” shill, globalist, hasn’t actually SEEN a “patient” in many years, “predicted” this pandemic, before President Trump was actually in office. (and sent OUR taxpayer dollars to this “lab” in wuhan)…. (isn’t this enough to cause suspicion that this was a “pre-planned” event?)
Apparently the communist Chinese saw and “opportunity” to make themselves the #1 economic power in the world and spread this “virus” to shut down many countries.
Never underestimate communists and their lust for power and control..(just like the democrats in this country)

    1. You are EXACTLY right. Dr. Fauci should NOT be trusted. He went so far Sat. as saying he thinks OUR country should stay on COMPLETE lockdown until there is a vaccine. And he said that could be as far out as 2021. I stand with OUR President on this. The economy NEEDS to be open. Yes. There may be more deaths. But then again; staying locked up inside may be worse. I know one thing. The good LORD will protect ALL HIS PEOPLE.

      🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 “TRUMP TRAIN 2020”🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  7. Fauci is bought & paid for by Gates- he’s corrupt to the core- he s/b charged w/CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY- he s/b n jail along w:Gates & Birx & Trump s/NOT LISTEN TO HIS BS!

  8. Dr.Fauci is a Joke.
He’s the one that had this virus to begin with here in the United States and he was ordered to stop and took it to China to continue with 3 million dollars to add from Obama.
Dr. Fauci is a Fraud and a liar.
He worked for Obama and I wouldn’t trust anyone in the Obama administration.
President Trump has been doing a Awesome Job and it’s the Democrats that are trying to force to people down and ruin them.
The Democrats are Looney Tune Crack Heads that are trying to make our country into a Communist Socialist country.
If these Democrats want to live like this than go live in a Communist Socialist country where the people are taken advantage, that government is stealing the hard earned money and lied too.
I believe in President Trump over Dr. Fauci any day.

  9. Open up the country this so called DR does not want you to be elected again GET RID OF THE DR AND BILL GATES

  10. I don’t trust Fauci he is only hacks from evils I trust our President with my life.Trump always will be bad man for evil because he fights something worse then anybody in American history everyone true citizen off USA ned stand up for our President and our country doesn’t meters price what we have to pay iff we stand together nobody can’t break our country and our President because people wake up don’t ever have doubts about TRUMP I’m nobody but I know who is god and bad I can see different I believe in god I believe in TRUMP and I’m all in with him God bless Trump his family our country and all off us

  11. I have just one question, CDC indicates that some where between 24000 to 62000 will die of the flu. Now this has been happening for years, and they still can’t predict any better than 28000 difference!!!! They have vaccines and other drugs for the flu and the results what they are!!!! It seems they are picking numbers out of the air, and than they say trust us. When are they going to address the real problem, the immune system and how or what should we all be doing to improve it. Lets face it, there will never be a cure available when a new virus occurs, so it is up to each individual to take care of themselves.

  12. I stand with President Trump!! We have to reopen our country! More and more are dying from suicide, and other things because of fear. The drug, alcohol, and family abuse is up! Suicide hotline have seen an enormous increase. More are suffering from the country being closed than from the virus!

  13. Dr. Fauci needs to be reminded of his place in this task force. He is not the administer of policy, he is only an advisor in all this and needs to be told to tone down his comments.
And the death totals can be cut in half as non Covid 19 deaths are being labeled as Covid 19 for political and money reasons for hospitals. Everyday I read another story about someone who dies and they label it cover 19 instead of the true reason.

  14. Here is a synopsis of Dr Fauci’s advise:
I hate to bring this up how would like to have been stuck on the Carnival cruise ship for a month? Well on March 9, 202 Dr. Fauci told people to go on a cruise if they wanted to do so. Yeah I think that advice would be malpractice at best and downright murder at worst. Yeah even Dr Fauci can be wrong and cost lives.

Dr Fauci also gave the Wuhan lab, under the Obama administration 3.7 million dollars of US taxpayer’s money for research in the Chrono virus. Still think he’s to be nominated for sainthood? A closer look at the public statements of those very same experts during the early weeks of the outbreak reveals that the administration’s initial reassurances were largely aligned with the assessments of the medical community. Dr. Fauci is now being hailed the media as a national hero of the pandemic response. but let’s rewind the clock back to January and Dr. Fauci’s public statements essentially mirrored those President Trump’s administration. 1. Jan. 21, 2020 Dr. Fauci emphasized that it was unclear whether the virus could spread from person to person: “Is it a continual spread? Is it sustained? We’re not quite sure yet.” 2. Jan. 23, 2020 in the Journal of the American Medical Association podcast, Dr. Fauci repeatedly downplayed the virus’ potential impact on the U.S., noting that all five cases here were travelers from China. He also noted that due to limited testing in China, the number of infections was likely much higher than official counts, meaning that the death rate of the virus was likely much lower than feared. When asked whether the U.S. might contemplate city-wide shutdowns like those China was enacting at the time, Dr. Fauci replied, “There’s no chance in the world that we could do that to Chicago or to New York or to San Francisco, but they’re doing it. So, let’s see what happens.” Most importantly, he added that it was still quite possible the Chinese could get control of the outbreak and prevent it from becoming a global issue, and that even if there were more cases in the U.S., “the CDC, as usual, is on top of things.” Sounds to me like he was not very worried about this virus’ effect on the US in general does it not? 3. Jan. 24, 2020 Dr. David Heymann, the former head of WHO’s response to SARS, offered that, unlike SARS, the coronavirus “looks like it doesn’t transmit through the air very easily and probably transmits through close contact,” in contrast with recent guidance that it can spread simply through breathing. This same day, Fauci emphasized that other coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS could not sustain person-to-person spread like the flu and that such viruses “maybe never will.” For its part, WHO noted that no person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 had been reported outside of China and that all of the deaths had been limited to that country. Dr. Fauci also took care to praise the Chinese government for “being quite transparent” and said he was “impressed” with officials’ cooperation. For its part, the CDC issued a press release on Jan. 24, 2020 asserting that “the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low” and instead asking that the public refrain from traveling to China and focus on the seasonal flu rather than the minimal risk of the coronavirus. On this same day in response to multiple questions about whether the CDC needed additional funding to combat the disease, Director Robert Redfield reassured senators that it had all of the funds it needed. Florida Sen. Rick Scott argued that despite the medical community’s calm reassurances that the risk was minimal, the White House should preemptively declare a public health emergency on the grounds that the information from China was likely incomplete and masked the true global threat of the disease. 4. Jan. 26, 2020 Dr. Fauci yet gain minimized the virus’ impact and portrayed it as a Chinese issue, asserting that “it’s a very, very low risk to the United States. … It isn’t something the American public needs to worry about or be frightened about. Because we have ways of preparing and screening of people coming in [from China].” 5. Jan. 27, 2020 Fauci was criticizing the lack of Chinese transparency, pointing in particular to new information that asymptotic individuals could be spreading the virus. Despite this, he continued to cite airport screening of travelers from China as the primary defense against it spreading to the U.S. 6. Jan. 28, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar repeated the assessment of the nation’s medical leadership that “the risk to any individual American is extremely low.” CDC also pushed back on reports from China that persons without symptoms could be spreading the disease, saying it had not been able to verify them. Dr. Fauci went a step further, claiming that “in all the history of respiratory viruses, asymptomatic transmission has never been the driver of outbreaks. An epidemic is not driven by asymptomatic carriers.” Unfortunately for us, this guidance was to come under new thus delaying these medical PHD’s increasing scrutiny and may have helped the pandemic spread throughout the globe the earlier above assessments. Especially as it was given to President Trump by these learned men of science. Even as WHO and the U.S. declared public health emergencies, Dr. Fauci repeated in a Jan. 31, 2020 White House briefing that “we still have a low risk to the American public,” which was echoed minutes later by Azar: “I want to stress: The risk of infection for Americans remains low.” Taking its cue from these medical experts, media reports of the time likewise minimized the dangers of the virus as “trivial” in comparison to flu, which claims tens of thousands of lives each year. Weeks later, Dr. Fauci was still downplaying the risks, saying on Feb. 18 that the “hypothetical danger of coronavirus” to America was “just minuscule” compared to the “real and present danger” of the seasonal flu. Days later r. Fauci finally changed his views and, in the process, was on his way to becoming a media star. Why was this so? All these quotes are easily verifiable and show that up until February 18, 2020 these medical duds were still downplaying the Chrono Virus dangers not only to the US but the entire world. It has come to light that China knew of this chronovirus out back as early as September of 2019. So all being said and done does this now demonstrate where the fault lies in this massive SNAFU.( Military term for “Situation Normal All F*@ked Up ) At least Trump smelled the threat and gave the following instructions on flights from China; February 2, 2020
11 U.S. airports will receive flights carrying passengers from China

WASHINGTON – To protect the American people from exposure to the coronavirus, on Sunday, February 2, 2020, the Acting Secretary Chad F. Wolf issued instructions supplementing a decision issued on January 31, 2020, and directed all flights from China and all passengers who have traveled to China within the last 14 days to be routed through one of eight U.S. airports, effective Sunday, February 2nd, 2020, for flights departing after 5:00 PM Eastern. Three additional airports will be added to the list of airports authorized to receive such flights beginning at various times on Monday, February 3, 2020. At these eleven airports, the United States Government has established enhanced screening procedures and the capacity to quarantine passengers, if needed.

Additionally, U.S. citizens who have been in Hubei province within 14 days of their return will be subject to up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine to ensure they are provided proper medical care and health screening. U.S. citizens who have been in other areas of mainland China within 14 days of their return will undergo proactive entry health screening and up to 14 days of self-quarantine with health monitoring to ensure they have not contracted the virus and do not pose a public health risk. Generally, foreign nationals (other than immediate family of U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and flight crew) who have traveled in China within 14 days of their arrival, will be denied entry into the United States.

President Trump was way ahead of these PHD’s and acted in the best interest of us, his fellow US citizens and our nation. So when you speak of these dolts, who consistently downplayed this threat to all the world, don’t elevate then to sainthood. Because at the very least it was malpractice and at the very worst murder. We depended on these guys and gals and they screwed the pooch and we paid the price. Do your dam homework before you offer your opinion. If you doubt these quotes look them up they are part of the public record.

I’ll stick with Trump in this match.

  15. How often to we hear about what kills the Corona Virus , Lysol , sunlight (3-5 min), heat, salt water, Clorox, just to name a few disinfectants that kill the virus in it’s track( this virus is very easy to kill! but, it does spread rather quickly) for most people it’s mores like getting the flue or cold…actually, the death figures we are getting, aren’t really accurate, and are very misleading…the number of deaths cause by corona are much lower than quoted…Do, the math folks, a little more than 1 million people have been diagnosed with the virus out of over 300 million people…I don’t personally know of anyone person within my large circle of friends, who knows of anyone who has or had the virus, in Florida…. Back in the 60’s, there was an out break of the corona virus, but, it was in cows and horses…The vet’s started injecting the animals with antibiotics and the Pneumonia vaccine which curbed and eventually, cured the spread of the virus …People we are being Duked, big time … Nov. 3, 2020 this virus will go away…as a life long Democrat, I suggest to all red blooded Americans and those who care about the future of our great country, never vote for a Democrat again!!!!People, you are getting your first look at Socialism in America from these Democrat governors for Virginia, Michigan and Illinois and California, etc. …This is what you can expect in the future if the socialist Democrats come to power…PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!

  16. My worry is the people that continue call Fauci the foremost expert in infectious disease. He is far from that. He is only for his own brand. He is betting on the worst case and if anything near that he will be the hero.I think he is a fraud and a fake. He has little man syndrome. Give him a raise and send him packing.

  17. From the start, the predictions by those wanting to SHUT DOWN THE COUNTRY, were unproven. They were just the opinions and without any fact basis. So what has time shown? I understand that Sweden, Taiwan and Singapore did not “lock down”. And they did not do much different than those who did. With the exception of Italy.
As to the “data” Is it not strange that the highest death rates are in cities controlled by Democrats. Any way to find out if they doctored the cause of death to include just about anything?
