Turn the Page on Impeachment

The national narrators of our politics love brandishing the word “historic” to describe the Trump impeachment process. But by now it feels unexceptional, more like Chapter 27 of the Same Old Saga. In their overdramatic Trump narrative, the president is always a democracy-killing villain who is about to get his comeuppance.

Month after month, network evening-news coverage of Donald Trump’s presidency has been notable mostly for its perpetual negativity. The Senate impeachment trial isn’t the slightest bit different. They spent more than two years “reporting” that a Russian collusion conspiracy would be exposed and prematurely end the Trump presidency. Now we’re nine months from Election Day, and Trump is still in charge … which means the beatings must continue.

Nicholas Fondacaro of the Media Research Center reported that in the first week of trial coverage, the anchors and reporters of ABC, CBS and NBC offered 34 statements on the merits of the pro-Trump and anti-Trump sides. Twenty of the 21 statements made about the Democratic House managers were positive. All 13 evaluations of Trump’s defense team were negative.

The editorializing is all in the adjectives and adverbs. On Jan. 23, NBC anchorman Lester Holt touted the “Democratic prosecutors” who are “painting a damning portrait of the president, who they say abused his power.” NBC’s Peter Alexander robotically added, “House prosecutors strongly defended the actions of both Joe and Hunter Biden, saying they did nothing wrong.”

They think Trump’s calling his conversation with the Ukrainian president “perfect” is ludicrous bombast but that claiming Joe and Hunter Biden “did nothing wrong” is stone-cold-sober analysis.

On Jan. 26, ABC reporter Kyra Phillips sounded upset. "Tonight, President Trump's legal team didn't even warm up, opening their defense straight to the point," she announced, "even getting personal, attacking lead House manager Adam Schiff, going after his summary of the president's phone call with Ukrainian President Zelensky at the center of it all."

Wait. Schiff and the Democrats can't be described as "getting personal" as they seek to get Trump fired? Why is it somehow treacherous and objectionable for Trump's defenders to attempt to take apart Schiff's case? This is how the dominant media talk.

Then there's the complete imbalance in time allotted. The networks reported on the Democratic managers for nearly 25 minutes and gave Trump's defense team 11 and a half minutes. "CBS Evening News" was the most imbalanced, giving 7 minutes and 42 seconds to Democrats and skimping on the Trump team with 2 minutes and 26 seconds, a difference of more than 3 to 1. NBC's gap was more than 2 to 1.

This overwhelming tilt is only the bias demonstrated during the traditional evening-news hours. Spread that notion across hours of live coverage, unspooling it on broadcast news and cable news, and the unfairness multiplies.

The American people should point and laugh at the idea that the networks would argue it is essential for the Senate jurors to be nonpartisan in their weighing of the evidence. Our media elites are never objective. The stakes are always too high for even-handedness. The damsel of democracy is always tied to the railroad tracks, and it would be irresponsible not to do everything to save her from her distress.

  1. The commie coup has failed again. The dems kept the same imbeciles in charge and expected a different result. By our standards that’s the definition of insanity. This is a democracy, a republic…it will never be a socialist nation. Get that thru your pea brains. Trump has done nothing that Obama didn’t do, so let’s cut the crap. Join the team or get the hell out…..

  2. I am physically sick of the democrats lying & getting away with it. I hope to NEVER see that bugeyed Shifty again when this is all over. I feel so sorry for Pres. Trump & all the ones’ who defended him during the circus we’ve been watching for the past two weeks. They did a tremendous job with their answers & explanations, yet the dems didn’t seem to get it. I hope every demorat who’s in now, will be voted OUT in Nov. & it makes me mad that they even got paid for the past 4 years. They’ve cost us tax payers so much money & all for their own selves. They want to rule america & dictate to us. I just keep repeating the scripture: What doth it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his own soul ?? May God bless america & Pres. Trump & continue to let us REPUBLICANS win in November .

  3. This is nothing more than the continuing fight against Elitism. We fought off the Elitist British to form this country, We fought the Elitist Plantation owners to preserve this country and we have fought against Elitism around the world ever since. Our founders believed in individual sovereignty, responsibility and liberty. And success based solely on individual merit. Not birthright.

The Elitists have simply learned that they can no longer ensure their supremacy through force of arms so they have switched to subversion, deception and subterfuge.

There will always be those who believe they are better than the rest of us, who should be in charge of us. It is a fight we can never completely win but it is a fight we must never stop fighting.

  4. Its just sad and unbelievable that in this day and age, those people just hate our President for no valid reason except for maybe because he was not a politician (not one of them) and would hinder their power and ability to deceit the American people, ignore the needs of the working class, and keep the power in their own little group.
They feel that their power is fleeing and they are desperate to hang onto it by any means.

  5. MEMORANDUM

TO: Nancy, and the Blue House Gang.
    FROM: A very, old, soldier/cop/grunt.

cc. President Trump, Americans, and the media.

RE: Just a few words to possibly make some of you a little wiser, if not at least more alert!

Would you really like some insight as to why some many of us old soldiers/cops (and many Americans in the heartland) spend the better part of our time these days trying to keep our latent homicidal tendencies latent? To keep the conversation as succinct as possible I will simply present a few lessons learned that were produced over a 45 year soldier/police career with some comments added to hopefully bring some of them into focus for the last three years.

    * Soldiers (ground combat soldiers, that is) do not fight first and foremost for their country, the flag, motherhood, girls back home, nor apple pie. Before all else, soldiers engaged in ground combat fight for their fellow soldiers and their unit. UPDATE: Those of you who consider yourselves important characters in the so-called American oligarchy had best be hopeful that this one is universally true. Were soldiers to pay full heed to their oath most of their combat sorties might end up being in and/or around the beltway!

    * The Seven C’s of Leadership according to a 1980 survey of 1646 Vietnam era ground combat veterans listed in the order of their importance are; Candor, Competence, Consistency, Commitment, Courage, Compassion, and Courtesy. The reason the soldiers in the survey chose the word “candor” is because to them candor encompasses both omission and co-mission. To a combat soldier the lack of absolute candor, be it co-mission or omission, are equal sins! In short, soldiers expect/demand absolute candor from those appointed to lead them before all else. UPDATE: Though none of you are leaders (IAW the Constitution all of you are representatives/public servants) thought I would make a couple of observations. First, you democrats have proven you are masters of co-mission, while republicans have proven they are masters of omission! Second, as a commander of soldiers/chief of police I have fired (relieved from duty) four commissioned officers, six sergeants, and three police officers. I did not fire/relieve a single one of the group for making mistakes or for not being fully qualified for their positions. I fired/relieved every single one of them for being less than candid with their subordinates and/or me! How do you think you and/or any member of your gang would make out if assigned to leadership position in an army combat or a police unit?

    * The American people are the most effectively lied to people in modern times thanks primarily to the American political class, the American bureaucracy, the American media, and American academia.

    * Arrogance coupled with ignorance equals stupidity.

    * The greatest threats to the American people are the corrupt and/or incompetent politicians/bureaucrats/academicians found at every level of government/academia, and the majority of the American so-called media.

    * Most of the politicians/bureaucrats/academicians I have encountered during my years as a soldier/cop I most kindly refer to as; self-serving, witless, cowards.

    * The American Profession of Arms and our brothers/sisters in blue have failed to protect the American people from all of their enemies, both foreign and most especially domestic.
    * There are only two primary requirements to be a career soldier and/or cop in America. One must be smart enough to do the work and dumb enough to take the job.

    * American soldiers and police officers must in addition to mastering all of their professionally mandated tasks, learn to accomplish the same with at least one arm tied behind their backs and their vision impaired 50% or more.

    * After carefully watching the whole of the political class since Donald J. Trump walked down that escalator in Trump Tower to date, I can say without reservation that most of the group will sell their souls and our bodies just to remain in power. (Added 2019)

    * Want to see what the United States of America will look like if the left takes control of the government? Take your pick, New York City, Baltimore, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or the complete package; California. (Added 2019)

    * If the so-called resistance movement continues unchecked in trying to destroy the first true leader to ever serve as the President and Commander-in-Chief a number of able veterans are going to be presented with a challenge/decision. Are the American people worth another drop of our sweat and/or our blood? (Added 2019)

    1. Character is to man what carbon is to steel.
    2. A man who trims himself to suit everybody will soon whittle himself away!
    3. An ounce of gold cannot buy a second of time.
    4. It is far more difficult to judge one’s self than to judge others!

    1. This is well written, to the point.
Yes as an American I to was blind, but with age I see much more clearly.
Our politicians will do anything ,lie ,cheat ,steal to remain in power.
And as far as politicians go they don’t care who they have to step on who they have to kill was sent to be killed just as long as their agenda is taken care of in their pockets and bellies are full .

  6. All I can say is I agree with all these comments I’m sick and tired of seeing what’s going on Washington my God what has happened to our country I hope all this works out and all those low lives over there On the Democratic side gets voted out I hope they never have a chance to get back into government! They have been setting up their getting fat off of the American people and by God I am praying that our president gets reelected in 2020!

  7. Charles Lauderdale’s comments are spot on, except in one detail. We have had great leaders in the White House before. Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan and now Trump. Even Bill Clinton might have received honorable mention if he had only kept his pants zipped while in his office. Don’t forget that Trump has a Military School background where he was elected Cadet Captain, and military service does seem to produce the best leaders. We are now in an age of Feminism, which is antithetical to leadership in many ways, as Hillary found out. I wonder how Charles would react to my proposed solution to the Clinton Punishment Question. Exile is the proper punishment for the great who have fallen. Trump should buy Haiti (instead of Greenland), set it up as a US Colony, and appoint Bill&Hill Colonial Governors, with the sole proviso being that they never set foot on continental US soil again. Bill will love it because he will have access to some of the most beautiful and exotic women on earth, Hillary will love it because it is as close as she will ever get to being Queen, and the Hatiians will love it because they are used to corruption on a clintonesque scale.
