A small Texas county with only 1,200 students is moving to allow teachers to carry firearms. The Grand Saline Independent School District is allowing teachers to concealed carry firearms.
This plan didn’t just pop up out of nowhere either. The district held discussions and plans to enact this for 3 years prior to approval. 300 other districts in Texas allow their teachers to carry in some capacity. Superintendent Micah Lewis said that 95% of residents in the district support arming teachers.
The teachers will have to go through screening and training before they are approved. Each applicant will have to pass a 40 hour course. Teachers will also have to renew their certification and take subsequent courses and trainings.
Schools need to be a safe space for children to learn and grow. Since 2018, there have been 103 school shootings, and 34 just last year. A teacher having to shoot an armed student is a hard pill to swallow. A room full of unprotected children falling victim to a violent attacker is a far more horrifying prospect. At least in Grand Saline, teachers will be trained, armed, and prepared to protect our nation’s future.
