A study done at Penn State College of Medicine found that mouthwash or an ‘oral rinse’ can inactivate human coronaviruses.
The study was published in the Journal of Medical Virology that included testing oral and nasal rinses’ effect on inactivating the human coronavirus 229e (a strain of coronavirus that causes the common cold)
The baby shampoo solution, “which is often used by head and neck doctors to rinse the sinuses,” the researchers noted in a news release regarding the findings, was particularly effective; the solution inactivated “greater than 99.9% of human coronavirus after a two-minute contact time,” they said.
What about the mouthwash?
Mouthwash is also extremely effective as well.
"Many inactivated greater than 99.9% of virus after only 30 seconds of contact time and some inactivated 99.99% of the virus after 30 seconds.”
They did not test this approach on the novel coronavirus strain also known as COVID-19 but did say the genetic makeup of COVID-19 is genetically similar to the other human coronaviruses they tested and therefore had hypothesized that it could lead to similar results.
At the end of the day, the study led them to believe that an oral rinse can reduce the viral load and can inhibit the production of viruses in the cells.
These are common household items many people already have at home and can begin using to help decrease their chances of falling ill with the virus.
Great, now I foresee thousands of idiots sniffing and gargling with baby shampoo.
I started using the Listerine breath strips when the virus started spreading everywhere. I wonder how those compare to using the actual liquid mouthwash!!
study funded by Listerine ?
Per earlier comment, it would indeed be more useful if the funder for the study were transparent.
My dentist started me brushing my teeth without toothpaste 20 years ago. He suggested a shot of Listerine Total Care (the purple stuff) has more and better chemicals in it than can be crammed into any toothpaste. It gets to places paste just cant go. Brushing with abrasives only eats enamel slowly away. It is not necessarily a good thing. Good brushing techniques with the newer complete mouthwashes such as the purple stuff does far more for you than half-ass brushing with a big mouth of paste. I have had NO cavities or mouth disorders in the time I have been doing it this way. Meanwhile, I have watched as my friends have poo-poo’d the advice and have many less teeth at this point, one buddy has 4 teeth left. Another has had all his top teeth pulled and wears a painful denture. I tried to tell them over the years but they were hooked into what they were told when they were 5. I told them even if they insisted on using paste to add the mouthwash while brushing. The advice was ignored. Good to see that the technique has shown even more benefit in these times. So far, I am negative for corona and have strong teeth.
Yeah , I use it and a shot of schnapps or bourbon works wonders also, I believe ( medicinal and no more than once a day ). I roast the tonsils for about 30 sec before chasing with hot coffee. Good observation from Penn State.
I’ve been gargling and brushing my teeth with Listerine for over twenty years and have not had the flu or a cold in that time. (this was actually introduced, for lack of a better word, by some medical group during the swine flu/ ‘Gargling with Listerine or warm salt water can reduce the chances of getting the flue by 80+ %, since all flues incubate in the back of the throat for 2-3 days’).
TRUE I am a firm believer user of Listerine and have recommended to many people. It kill the bacteria, germs and viruses.
How do you “inactivate ” something that isn’t alive?
How do you “inactivate ” something that isn’t alive?
You strip off its lipid covering with alcohol or other chemicals which “deactivates” its effectiveness and reduces its life, such as the “life” of, say, the motor oil in your combustion engine.
