The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ruled that it is legal to withhold federal funds from self-described ‘Sanctuary Cities’. The ruling overturned a lower court decision that stopped President Trump from withholding federal funds from a grant program that would redistribute that money to criminal justice departments that protect illegals.
President Trump weighed in on Twitter:
“As per recent Federal Court ruling, the Federal Government will be withholding funds from Sanctuary Cities. They should change their status and go non-Sanctuary,” he said. “Do not protect criminals!”
This decision is not likely the final say, though. It conflicts with other court decisions across the country so, at some point, we should expect a Supreme Court review.
President Trump says the move is to help keep Americans safe but opponents say it does the opposite. Liberal meccas like New York, Massachusetts, Washington, and California will be putting up a fight. They say that by enforcing the law it somehow makes communities less safe.
Sanctuary cities put a roadblock between local law enforcement and immigration authority. They keep illegal immigrants, who are already being held for a crime, out of jail and back on the streets before ICE can get to them.
Democrats, including just recently Joe Biden, have been vociferous on the issue claiming that these are just good people ICE is after and they don't deserve to be arrested or deported. However, ICE has a very different take on it and it's backed up with facts.
In a letter to de Blasio last month, ICE Acting Director Matt Albence noted that ICE’s New York City Enforcement and Removals Office issued detainers on 7,526 subjects who had criminal histories, including 3,500 assaults, 1,500 DUIs, 1,000 sex crimes, 1,000 weapons offenses, 500 robberies and 200 homicides.
That doesn't sound like innocent victims being targeted. Those are people that we'd want off the street whether they were citizens or not. It's time to stop protecting criminals. Luckily, for US citizens, we have a President who puts Americans first and enforces our laws.
