Ending Abortion Is Worth Any Economic Consequence

Abortion activists scream loudly that conservatives are either turning the United States into a theocracy or imposing their morality on the nation by banning abortion. It is one of the desperate primal cries of a group that knows it is losing the fight. They would not suddenly be referring to abortion as “self-termination” if they were winning. National Public Radio would not be reminding its reporters to refer to babies as “fetuses,” despite almost every OB-GYN using the term “baby,” if the left were winning this fight.

The very fact that the left must redefine words and change the terminology of the existing debate shows just how badly they are losing. One of the more striking things missing from the debate over pro-life legislation across the nation is a bevy of credible polling showing Republicans will get hurt by the legislation. Our poll-hungry media is, on this issue, dieting. The only thing the left has left is economic sabotage.

In Georgia and elsewhere, progressives demand Hollywood studios and other businesses abandon the states. Little-known actors and producers are complying. Few big names are. But as some progressive film activists scale back work in pro-life states, the left is screaming that pro-lifers are willing to sacrifice good economies and jobs to save children. Absolutely. I am willing to sacrifice jobs to save lives.

First, this is not about me or anyone else imposing a theocracy on America. It is, however, about me being guided by my morals in pursuit of sound public policy. Every single person makes decisions based on what they think is right and wrong. Progressives demand Christian businesses go out of business if they will not comply with the gay agenda. Progressives demand Americans pay more in taxes to redistribute it to people progressives claim need the money more. Everyone governs based on their moral code.

My moral code values life more than money. Progressives actually value money greatly. Rich Hollywood stars like the power that comes with money. It all reminds me of my favorite Psalm, the 73rd.

In that psalm, the writer, Asaph, ponders why the wicked prosper. Asaph sees that those who reject God tend to do better in the world. "They have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek." Psalm 73:4. "Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches." Psalm 73:12.

Asaph finally realizes that their prospering is a mercy from God. This world is the best the wicked will ever have. God is letting them enjoy it. The situation is much like what Amos describes. The first of the prophets, Amos went from the Kingdom of Judah up to the Kingdom of Israel. Judah, which worshipped God, was rural and poor. Israel, which had perverted the true religion and worshipped as pagans, was rich and prosperous. The people took this as a sign that God favored them.

Amos assured them this was not so. God was being merciful with his people, hoping they would come back to him. They were prospering, but if they did not repent, they would be destroyed. The wicked prosper in part because of God's mercy. This world is the best they will ever have it and the worst God's people will ever have it.

This bears out in the fight over abortion. The secular abortionists hide behind wealth and euphemism to deny they are killing human beings. They think they can persuade others to abandon their causes by dangling dollars in front of them. Some will cave, and others will buckle. More will cave because they want to be liked. Progressive theologians, like the priests of the Kingdom of Israel, will justify the killing and condemn as intolerant those who behave justly. They will get TV appearances and book deals and hang out with celebrities who toast them.

As for me and my house, however, we serve the Lord. We do so in how we view public policy as much as in other areas of our lives. And the God we worship compels us to put the lives of children ahead of money.

  1. So, the liberals are concerned that we conservatives are forcing our moral values on them!
Is this then an admission by the liberals that they have NO moral values of their own?
There seems to be nothing moral about the liberals and/or the Democratic party that they
have to offer anyone by their actions or demonstrated values.
A common statement is, “How can the blind lead the blind without both falling into a ditch!”

  2. The only reason the democrats are for abortion is because they need the liberal vote anyway they can get it.The only life they care about are their own. They don’t even care about their voters.

  3. All the people who believe that abortion is a moral act and a right are being deceive by Satan, The Great Deceiver and Father of Lies. Abortion is intentional killing a baby and an immoral act. All the people who support abortion should be grateful that their mother did not believe in abortion. If they did, all these people who support abortion would have never existed to support this inhuman and savage way to murder a baby.

  4. Its all come down too , at the end of everyone life, We will be held accountable for are action and decision, WE will answer to God.

  5. We will never be blessed anymore, as long as we kill innocent babies, born or unborn. Why not after the baby is born ( alive) let’s have a one year grace period to see if we really want this child, then if not we can do away with him then. The child begins at conception. My granddaughter is 30 years old, she tells me all her girlfriends consider abortion “birth control”, they aren’t desperate and pregnant, they are just ignorant and brain washed by the far left agenda. I think there is a moral way to practice “birth control” other than killing the unborn. And, it is safer also for the mom, we are NOT getting the message out to our young people that killing children is not birth control, it is murder.

    1. “all her girlfriends consider abortion birth control”

I was in a debate recently, where the person on the pro-abortion side was so brainwashed, they actually said “abortion prevents pregnancy.”

This kind of anti-science brainwashing by the mainstream media is what we’re up against. We have to fight hard!

  6. Excellent article. I will ponder the thought about this world being the best the wicked will have and the worst a Christian will have for a long time. Thank you for giving me food for thought. And pray for those who despitefully use us.

  7. What wonderful article!…and a new approach to thinking about this issue. Euphemistic is and has been a standard of the pro-“choice” movement – the opposite of pro-life is pro-“death”! Let’s all pray daily that this spiral of moral decay in which we find our country, of which abortion is a standard bearer, will slow and reverse as the power or prayer and belief in the power of our God win the battle!

  8. Excellent Article Agree with all of the above but like Mary Snyder will ponder what you showed us from the Bible about the world. I am a Christian and very definitely Pro-Life, and praying that more and more will see the light. This article will help in standing for life against those supporting Abortion including my Gov. and a good number in our Legislature. The Constitution of the United States does not guarantee women the right to Abortion.πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ‘ΆπŸ‘ΆπŸ‘Ά

  9. Erick,

You claim that the pro-life agenda is not a theocratic agenda – and I agree, because there are many atheists who recognize that it’s unethical to discriminate against a child on the basis of whether he or she happens to have been born, or on the basis of his or her state of development. There is no sound reason why there shouldn’t be inclusive equality in how the lives of adolescents, fetuses, toddlers, and embryos alike are protected by law.

But then you go on to cite lots of Scripture, and to equate being pro-life with “serving the Lord.” The pro-abortion crowd will point to this column and say “he proves our point! The pro-life agenda is totally theocratic!”

Your column preaches to the choir – in many cases, no doubt, literally.

But most of the heart and minds that we need to change reside in non-religious people. Citing Scripture is counterproductive, when it comes to appealing to those people. Try citing science, logic and reason. Pro-abortion arguments easily crumble when poked by science, logic and reason.

For example, apply a little critical thinking to the platitude that the pro-abortion crowd loves to mindlessly bleat: “My body, my choice!” In the violent act of abortion, it’s not the woman’s body that gets dismembered. It’s someone else’s body – namely, that of her daughter or son – that gets dismembered. And does her daughter or son have any choice in the matter? No; they are killed long before they reach an age where they could give informed consent to the procedure that kills them.

When these two facts are pointed out – that the body most affected by the violent act of abortion is not the woman’s body, and that the owner of the mortally-affected body is given absolutely no choice in the matter – the brain-dead slogan “my body, my choice!” falls completely apart.

See how I did that, Erick? I appealed to logic and reason – not to Scripture, which causes the audience we need to reach most to run away screaming “Theocrat! Theocrat!”

  10. “hide behind wealth and euphemism to deny they are killing human beings. ”

Pro-abortion arguments are a house of cards, because every single one of them relies on a euphemism. For a certain percentage of the population who lack critical thinking skills, euphemisms transform the unthinkable into something palatable.

Take the word “abort” itself. If I begin to change lanes while driving down the highway, and then I change my mind, I have aborted my lane change. If a pilot is not lined up well with the runway, they can abort the landing and go around for a second attempt. The word “abort” used to be innocuous, see? Then the pro-abortion crowd hijacked it, and “abort your pregnancy” became a euphemism for “kill your baby.”

And then there’s the euphemism that is the word “choice.” They never say what, exactly, is being chosen. Some sick women who have chosen abortion are actually proud of their choice. Everyone should challenge them: “What choice did you make, exactly? Did you choose to buy rye bread instead of white bread? Did you choose to paint a wall yellow instead of beige? Or did you choose to kill your daughter or son, when instead you could have allowed loving adoptive parents to care for your daughter or son?”
